ADVENTURES IN NEPAL
In April 2015 severe earthquakes shook Nepal, killing around 9,000 people and destroying countless temples, homes, and schools. I was traveling in Northern India during this time, and if my travel plans went accordingly, I would have been in the earthquakes! Knowing that I needed to return and help, I returned to Calgary to fundraise money for various philantropic efforts. Here is the story of my time back in Calgary, and the on the ground work I did over 3 months in Nepal!

Over the garage sale weekend we raised over $2000! The community donated items, and so many people came to help Nepal.

Shree Basuki Primary English School
Sotang, Solukhumbu
I had been in contact with the Nepal English Education Foundation for a couple months already, hearing about their many needs at the school. So, my first stop in Nepal was going to this remote village- about a 12 hour trip from Kathmandu.

Students inside the Temporary Learning Centre that was built with the fundrasied money. Seeing as most buildings in Nepal are made of bricks, the regular school building was deemed unsafe after the disaster.

Here I am with school board members and teachers after installing a simple, bucket design water purification system in the staff room.

I introduce you to the Grade K-5 students of the school!
Back in Kathmandu, I settled in to the Tibetan neighborhood called Boudhanath. From here I went on all sorts of adventures!

I met the principal of a small monastery, and before I knew it I was teaching one class of teenage monks! We learned all sorts of things, from the Big Bang to world geography!

Through a friend who owned a thanka (mandala painting shop) I met Deepak (centre). He told me of a school in the hardest-hit area of Sindupalchowk that lost their school, and with that, all their uniforms! So, Deep and I loaded up a bus and delivered 100 sweaters to the students.
I joined Backpacking4Betty, a small NGO from the USA, and installed a 500L water tank in a village near the capital!

I fed many street people with the fundraised money, including this lovely mom and her baby.
I met many street dogs while in Kathmandu. There are unfed puppies everywhere, as their moms are out looking for food for themselves. There were 2 new puppy litters I fed for over a month... it was wonderful watching them grow!
